Heat Pump vs. AC: Which Is Right for Lampasas, TX?

If your air conditioner is aging out and you're shopping for a replacement, you've probably come across heat pumps. They're everywhere right now — and for good reason. But are they the right choice for a home in Lampasas, Burnet, or the surrounding Hill Country? Let's break it down.

What's the Difference Between a Heat Pump and a Traditional AC?

A traditional central air conditioner does one thing: it removes heat from inside your home and dumps it outside. When winter comes, you switch to a separate furnace or heat strips.

A heat pump does both. In summer it works just like an AC. In winter it reverses the process — pulling heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. One system, two seasons.

Does a Heat Pump Work in Central Texas?

This is the question we hear most. Heat pumps have a reputation for struggling in cold climates, and that reputation is partly earned — older models lost efficiency below freezing. But Central Texas winters are mild. Lampasas averages lows in the mid-30s in January, and hard freezes are rare and short-lived.

Modern heat pumps — especially the inverter-driven models we install from York, Mitsubishi, and LG — maintain strong efficiency down to 0°F and below. For most Hill Country homes, a heat pump handles heating and cooling comfortably all year.

The Efficiency Advantage

Here's the math that makes heat pumps attractive: a standard electric furnace or heat strips convert electricity to heat at roughly 1:1 efficiency. A heat pump moves heat rather than generating it, delivering 2–4 units of heat energy for every 1 unit of electricity consumed. That's a 200–400% efficiency rating, called COP (Coefficient of Performance).

For homeowners in Lampasas, Kempner, or Copperas Cove who heat with electricity, a heat pump can cut winter heating bills significantly.

When a Traditional AC + Gas Furnace Still Makes Sense

If your home already has a gas furnace that's in good shape, replacing just the AC unit and keeping the furnace is often the most cost-effective path. Natural gas is typically cheaper per BTU than electricity in Texas, so a gas furnace paired with a high-efficiency AC can beat a heat pump on annual operating cost — especially if you heat heavily.

We'll always run the numbers for your specific home before recommending a direction.

Upfront Cost Comparison

Heat pumps generally cost a bit more upfront than a comparable AC-only system because you're buying heating and cooling capability in one unit. However, if you're replacing both your AC and your electric heat strips or aging furnace, a heat pump often comes out ahead on total installed cost.

Federal tax credits through the Inflation Reduction Act currently offer up to $2,000 for qualifying heat pump installations. We can walk you through what applies to your situation.

What About Humidity?

Central Texas summers are humid, and your HVAC system is your first line of defense. Heat pumps in cooling mode dehumidify just as effectively as traditional AC systems. Some variable-speed models actually do a better job because they run longer at lower capacity, pulling more moisture out of the air.

Our Recommendation for Hill Country Homes

For most homes in Lampasas, Marble Falls, Burnet, and the surrounding area:

  • All-electric home? A heat pump is almost always the better choice.
  • Gas furnace in good shape? Keep it and replace just the AC.
  • Gas furnace aging out? A heat pump replacement package often makes financial sense.
  • Garage, addition, or room that's hard to condition? A ductless mini-split heat pump is the cleanest solution.
