Repair or Replace Your AC? How to Decide
Is your air conditioner struggling to keep up? Learn the key signs that tell you whether a repair will do the job — or whether it is time to invest in a new system.
It's the middle of a Texas summer, your AC is struggling, and you're facing a repair bill. The question every homeowner eventually asks: is it worth fixing, or should I just replace the whole thing?
There's no single right answer — it depends on the age of your system, the cost of the repair, and how efficiently your current unit is running. After nearly 40 years of HVAC work in the Hill Country, we've helped hundreds of families work through this exact decision. Here's how we think about it.
The Age of Your System
The average air conditioning system lasts 12–15 years with proper maintenance. If your unit is approaching or past that range, the math often starts to favor replacement over repair — even for relatively minor issues.
An older system is also likely running on outdated refrigerant (R-22, also known as Freon), which has been phased out and is now extremely expensive to purchase. If your older system needs a refrigerant recharge, that alone can cost more than the repair is worth.
General rule: If your system is under 8 years old and the repair is straightforward, fix it. If it's over 12 years old, get a replacement quote before committing to a major repair.
The $5,000 Rule
A commonly used guideline in the HVAC industry is to multiply the age of your system (in years) by the cost of the repair. If that number exceeds $5,000, replacement is usually the smarter financial move.
For example:
- 10-year-old system x $400 repair = $4,000 — Repair makes sense
- 12-year-old system x $600 repair = $7,200 — Replacement is worth considering
- 14-year-old system x $800 repair = $11,200 — Replace
This isn't a hard rule, but it's a useful gut-check before you spend money on a system that's nearing the end of its life anyway.
Signs Your AC System Is on Its Way Out
Beyond age and repair costs, watch for these warning signs that your system may be failing:
It Can't Keep Up With the Heat
If your AC runs constantly but your home never reaches the set temperature — especially during peak afternoon heat — the system may be undersized, losing efficiency, or failing. In Texas, this is more than a comfort issue; it's a health and safety concern.
Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing
A sudden or gradual increase in your electricity bill without a change in usage habits often points to a declining HVAC system. As components wear out, the system has to work harder and longer to do the same job.
It Needs Frequent Repairs
One repair every few years is normal. But if you're calling for service every season, those costs add up fast — and they're a sign that the system is deteriorating across the board, not just in one spot.
It Makes Unusual Noises
Banging, grinding, squealing, or rattling sounds are never a good sign. Some noises indicate a loose or failing component that can be repaired; others signal more serious internal damage.
Uneven Cooling Throughout the House
If some rooms are comfortable while others stay warm, the problem could be with your ductwork, your thermostat, or the system itself. A technician can diagnose whether the issue is fixable or a sign of broader system failure.
The Case for Replacing Sooner Rather Than Later
Waiting until your system completely fails is rarely the best strategy. Here's why:
You'll have no leverage. When your AC dies in August and your house is 90 degrees, you're not in a position to shop around or wait for the best deal. Emergency service calls cost more, and you may end up with whatever equipment is available rather than what's best for your home.
New systems are significantly more efficient. A modern high-efficiency system can use 20–40% less energy than a 15-year-old unit. Over time, those savings offset a significant portion of the replacement cost.
